SCHOOL SAFETY IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

Keeping students, staff, and families safe remains our top priority. Safe campuses allow teaching, learning, and growing to happen every day. It is our shared responsibility to create and maintain those safe environments.

We are all aware that, in today’s world, school safety must be taken seriously and approached collectively. While these situations are difficult to talk about, we also know that we cannot ignore them. In recent months, there have been cases in southern California involving firearms brought to school. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it served as a powerful reminder of why we must stay vigilant.

At Fountain Valley School District, we continue to reinforce safe practices across all school sites, including securing perimeter gates, locking classroom doors during instructional time, and strictly following visitor check-in protocols. Our staff is trained in emergency procedures, and we conduct regular safety drills with our students.

But safety doesn’t stop at the school gate—it’s a partnership. As parents and guardians, please take time to plug in to what your children are seeing, saying, and sharing. Have age-appropriate conversations with them about safety, responsible decision-making, and the importance of speaking up if they see or hear something concerning. Don’t assume they already know. Encourage them to “See Something and Say Something” to a trusted adult at school or at home.

We also want to remind our community about the importance of secure firearm storage. While we respect the rights of responsible gun owners, ensuring that firearms are stored safely, locked, and inaccessible to children is critical to preventing tragedies. We encourage all families to review safety practices at home. Here is an article about the Be SMART campaign, which is a helpful, non-political resource that offers tips and information about responsible gun storage and child safety.

In FVSD, we believe that creating safe school communities requires all of us working together. Thank you for being our partners in this vital effort.

E-BIKE SAFETY

FVSD partnered with the Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD), the Fountain Valley Police Department (FVPD), CHOC Children's Hospital, and Super73 Electric Bike Manufacturer to help our students ride smarter and safer on e-bikes. From obstacle courses and test rides to free helmets and safety tips, our community showed up and showed out. Be on the lookout for the next e-bike safety event this summer--July 26, 2025, at Mile Square Park Founders Hall.

WELLNESS WEEK 2025 - Supporting the Whole Child

At FVSD, we know that proper safety includes more than just physical security; it also means supporting students’ emotional and mental well-being. That’s why our middle schools recently celebrated Wellness Week 2025, a week dedicated to connection, joy, and self-care.

From interacting with baby goats and certified service animals to participating in daily games and wellness activities, students had opportunities to relax, recharge, and build positive coping skills. These events are part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing the whole child because when students feel safe, seen, and supported, they are best able to learn and thrive.

NOURISHING STUDENTS--SUPPORTING SUCCESS

When we talk about safety, we’re also talking about meeting students’ basic needs, including access to healthy, nourishing meals. A well-fed student is more ready to learn, engage, and thrive in a school environment that supports the whole child.

During our recent LCAP input sessions, students and families shared their appreciation for both the food and the Food Services staff. Who wouldn’t love a sweet and juicy orange, already sliced and ready to enjoy? Our Food Services team uses data to guide their practices and knows that students are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables when they’re prepped and ready to go. So that’s exactly what they do; they prep it, serve it, and watch it disappear!

While we’re always working to improve our offerings, FVSD is proud of the exceptional work our team is doing to implement universal meals throughout the school year and even during summer, ensuring no child has to learn on an empty stomach.
